What Is Anxiety?

We’ve all experienced anxiety at some point in our lives. Anxiety, or worry, is a natural human emotion that alerts us to danger or helps prepare us for something important. Sometimes, however, symptoms can become so intense that they feel difficult to manage. Anxiety often shows up through both physical and psychological symptoms.

Common physical symptoms of anxiety include:

  • Rapid heart rate

  • Sweating

  • Trembling or shaking

  • Shortness of breath

  • Chest pain

  • Dizziness

  • Gastrointestinal issues (nausea, diarrhea, stomachaches)

  • Tense muscles

Common psychological and emotional symptoms of anxiety include:

  • Fear or excessive worry

  • Restlessness, feeling tense, difficulty sitting still, or feeling on edge

  • Racing thoughts or difficulty slowing down the mind

  • Feeling detached or out of control

  • Fear of dying

  • Fear of future events

  • Fatigue

  • Changes in sleep or appetite

  • Avoiding situations that trigger anxiety

  • Worrying about everyday events

  • Difficulty controlling anxious thoughts

  • Feeling stuck in “fight, flight, or freeze” mode

If you recognized yourself in any of these symptoms, support is available. Therapy can help you understand what’s happening in your body and mind—and how to respond with more ease.

How Does Therapy for Anxiety Help?

Treatment for anxiety typically involves identifying triggers, recognizing early warning signs, developing coping strategies for managing anxiety when it starts, and shifting thought patterns that may be keeping anxious thoughts and feelings present.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a proven, evidence-based approach that helps teach the brain different ways of responding to anxiety. The idea behind CBT is that how we think influences how we feel, and how we feel influences how we respond. Sometimes we get locked into patterns of thinking the same way, feeling the same way, and responding in the same way. Working with an experienced therapist who specializes in anxiety can help you identify thought patterns that may be contributing to your anxiety and develop practical, useful coping strategies to manage symptoms more effectively.

What Can I Expect in Therapy With Jennifer Waterman, LCSW?

When you decide it’s the right time in your life to begin therapy, you can submit a request through my website. I will follow up within one business day to schedule a completely free 15-minute consultation.

This brief phone call allows us to discuss your reasons for seeking counseling and gives you an opportunity to learn more about me and my approach. If we mutually decide to move forward, I will send intake documents for electronic signatures and review insurance and payment information with you. We will then schedule your first telehealth session using a secure, HIPAA-compliant platform.

Therapy sessions are 55 minutes. The first few sessions focus on getting to know each other and understanding your goals for therapy. I will also make recommendations regarding session frequency. Most clients attend therapy weekly or every other week. Some clients continue for a few weeks or months, while others stay longer. Every person is unique, and each therapy experience is unique as well.
