How a Therapist Specializing in Women’s Issues Can Support You

Hi there! I’m Jennifer Waterman, LCSW, a telehealth mental health therapist/founder of JR Counseling Services, Inc, based in La Grange, IL, serving women across Chicagoland and throughout Illinois. I’m deeply passionate about working with women and fellow mothers across the lifespan, supporting my clients as they navigate the many stressors they may be facing.

So, what kinds of things does a women’s therapist help with? Continue reading to learn more about how therapy can support you.

Therapy for Women Across the Lifespan

I am committed to helping women navigate a wide range of women’s issues, including fertility challenges, pregnancy loss, the prenatal and postpartum periods, and the ongoing emotional demands of parenting. These experiences can be deeply personal, complex, and often isolating — but you don’t have to move through them alone.

Pregnancy and Postpartum Mental Health Support

Pregnancy can bring a wide range of emotions, from joy and excitement to anxiety, fear, and self-doubt. Even positive changes can feel destabilizing. During this time, many women find themselves making decisions not only for themselves, but for their baby and family — a responsibility that can feel overwhelming.

During pregnancy, the brain is flooded with new hormones. Immediately after delivery, those hormone levels shift dramatically. These changes can contribute to emotional symptoms during the postpartum period. Postpartum depression and postpartum anxiety may feel similar to the “baby blues,” or they may be more intense and longer-lasting.

Short-term symptoms may include:

  • Tearfulness
  • Mood swings
  • Irritability
  • Low or sad mood
  • Anxiety or excessive worry
  • Difficulty concentrating

Symptoms lasting longer than two weeks may include:

  • Intense sadness, guilt, or hopelessness
  • Loss of interest in activities you once enjoyed
  • Ongoing anxiety or panic attacks
  • Difficulty sitting still or feeling constantly on edge
  • Sleeping too much or struggling with insomnia
  • Difficulty focusing or making decisions
  • Withdrawing from family and friends
  • Feeling disconnected from your baby

If you are experiencing thoughts of harming yourself or others, please call 911 or go to your nearest emergency room for immediate support.

The intense emotions experienced during pregnancy and the postpartum period can leave many women feeling isolated or alone. Often, women hesitate to talk about what they’re feeling, which can make symptoms feel bigger and more unmanageable. Talking with someone who has experience supporting women and mothers during pregnancy and postpartum can help you process your emotions and learn practical coping strategies for managing stress, uncertainty, and sleepless nights.

The sooner you reach out for support, the sooner you can begin to feel like yourself again—grounded, supported, and healthier.

When you’re taking care of everyone else, who is taking care of you?

Therapy can be a space where you are allowed to prioritize yourself — to reconnect with who you are, what you need, and how to care for yourself without guilt. You deserve care, understanding, and support — not just for those you love, but for yourself as well.

Jennifer Waterman, LCSW at JR Counseling Services Inc, a women’s health telehealth therapist with decades of experience helping women and mothers in La Grange, IL and across Chicagoland is here to help with anxiety, depression, mood disorders, caregiver stress and women’s issues.
